WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Freshman Caroline Stanley continued to shine in her opening weekend of collegiate play, scoring her first career goal to highlight Davidson's 5-1 loss to Rider at American University on Sunday.
Stanley and senior Hannah Fisher registered two shots apiece, and junior Courtney Byler dished out her second helper of the season, a statistic she led the league in last season.
The Broncs wasted no time getting on the board, scoring within the first six minutes of play off a slight dribble and pull to the right of the cage. They added two more goals in the first period, both coming off penalty corners.
Late in the half, freshman Sydney McKenna forced a penalty corner for the 'Cats, and Stanley took the tip from Byler and found the back of the cage.
The 'Cats started the second half controlling possession, firing off two shots on-goal right away courtesy of Fisher and junior Kristin Kisa.
Rider regrouped, adding to their lead about 50 minutes into play, and then fired their final shot on a dribble-pull-push type of sequence about six minutes after that.
The 'Cats will return to the turf Friday, Sept. 8, traveling the short distance to Boone, N.C., to face in-state rival Appalachian State.
