WASHINGTON, D.C. – A late-half surge from the Hoyas spoiled Davidson field hockey's Opening Day, as the 'Cats dropped a 2-1 contest to Georgetown on the road.
The teams were in a pressurized stalemate until midway through the second frame, when senior (and A-10 Preseason All-Conference selection) Hannah Fisher broke the scoreless tie, taking advantage of a deflection from a penalty corner from classmate Lauren Gampper and junior Courtney Byler.
Defense provided most of the first-half entertainment, as both teams were held to no shots on goal until under the 25-minute mark. Freshman Caroline Stanley recorded her first collegiate stat, notching two shots on-goal to end the first period. Junior goalkeeper Bean Rodriguez collected three saves in the half, while the backfield of Anna Brewer, Gampper, Morgan French and Byler added strong protection around the cage.
Georgetown netted the equalizer just under the five-minute mark in regulation off a scramble in front of the cage, and then connected for the game-winner with less than a minute remaining on a play coming from a penalty corner.
Rodriguez finished the game with seven saves, while veteran Paige Albert led the team with three shots (two on-goal). Byler also registered a defensive save, a statistic she led the league in a year ago.
Davidson will look to break into the win column Sunday, facing Rider in a neutral-site contest held at American University.
