NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Davidson College placed 133 of a new Atlantic 10 record 1,819 student-athletes on the 2017 Spring Commissioner's Honor Roll, announced by the conference Tuesday.
For the fourth straight semester, this total, as well as the average per school, set league records. Including the fall semester numbers, there were a total of 3,581 honorees during 2016-17, the most in league history. Previously the single year record was 3,377, set in 2015-16. Both marks are the best single-semester numbers of Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade's tenure.
The 1,819 is the highest number of student-athletes that have qualified for the award since 2007 when the lists were regularly compiled. The total surpassed the 1,763 set during the 2016 fall semester, which was announced in February. In addition, the 14 member institutions had an average 129.8 student-athletes qualify for the Commissioner's Honor Roll, surpassing last semester's record average of 125.9 honorees per institution.
The 133 Wildcats honored were the most in their three years in the Atlantic 10. Women's indoor and outdoor track had 22 student-athletes to pace the 'Cats for the third consecutive semester. Next was women's soccer and men's track and field with 14 each, followed by baseball with 12.
To be listed on the bi-annual Commissioner's Honor Roll, a student-athlete in an Atlantic 10-sponsored sport must have a 3.5 GPA or better (on a 4.0 scale) during the specified semester. Freshmen are eligible to receive the award.
George Mason had the most spring semester honorees with 159, followed by Fordham with 157 and Massachusetts with 156. For the year, Fordham (323), UMass (321), and George Mason (304) totaled the most honorees.
