DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson women's lacrosse team along with five individual players earned a spot on the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Zag Sports Academic Honor Squad for the 2016-2017 academic year.
For the seventh consecutive year, dating back to 2011, the Wildcats earned the team academic honor, while seniors Annie Brockett, Kendall and Abigail Thielemann and Morgan Burch along with junior Rachel Hianik were named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Academic Honor Roll. This marks the sixth year in a row at least two Wildcat players were named to the honor roll.
Burch and the Thielemanns were each honored last year, joining Paige Logan '14 and Erin Keitel '14 as the only players to twice have been named to the honor roll.
In order to qualify for the team honor, the women's lacrosse team had to have posted a 3.0 or higher team grade point average for the year. The five 'Cats were part of numerous student-athletes from 102 different institutions to be named to the 2017 IWLCA Division I Academic Honor Roll. In order to be eligible for this honor, student-athletes must be a junior, senior, or graduate student and earned a cumulative academic GPA of 3.50 or greater.
Davidson is coming off an 8-10 season with a 5-4 record in Atlantic 10 play. It won the program's first A-10 tournament game by scoring a comeback 14-13 victory against George Mason to reach the semifinals for the first time.
Brockett, who graduated this past May with a degree in French, closed out her four-year career by setting personal bests during her senior season in goals (50), assists (9), points (team-best 59), shots (122), groundballs (15), draw controls (6) and caused turnovers (8), while starting all 18 games. In addition the senior went 15-for-35 on free-position attempts.
The Shaker Heights, Ohio, native leaves Davidson with her name in the record books, ranking seventh in career goals (102) and just outside the top-10 in points with 123. Her 50 goals this year were tied for third-most all time in a single season.
Kendall Thielemann, who graduated with a degree in political science, recorded an outstanding senior season, setting personal bests in every category. She was named to both the Fall and the Spring A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll this past year, while finishing with career highs of seven goals, 17 assists (third-most on team) and 24 points. She also started 16 of her 18 games played this year.
Her sister Abigail graduated as well with a degree in political science and earned A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll five times. Burch was a three-time Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree during her career and graduated with a degree in chemistry.
Hianik was once again one of the Wildcats' top defenders this past season, starting all 18 games. She filled the end of the year stat-sheet with 28 groundballs, 10 draw controls and 12 caused turnovers, all career highs and finished second on the team in groundballs. She was named to the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll for both the Fall and Spring semesters, while majoring in biology.
