DAVIDSON, N.C. — Head coach Kim Wayne and the Davidson women's lacrosse team recently picked their team captains for the 2018 season and seniors Rose Woolson and Rachel Hianik along with Sarah Kopp were each tabbed captains.
All three players were key contributors during the 2017 campaign in helping Davidson reach the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship.
An all-second team pick in 2016 as one of the top goalies in the A-10, Woolson had a career season as a junior. The Baltimore, Md., native set personal bests in saves (165), minutes (1,031:05), wins (8), groundballs (team-best 67) and caused turnovers (13). Her 67 groundballs paced the league and set a new Wildcat single-season record, while she ranked seventh in the nation.
Woolson also put her name in the singles-season record books in saves (6th) and minutes (3rd). After her third season, the goalkeeper is seventh with 280 saves and eighth in minutes. Outside of her numbers, the junior was a two-time A-10 Defender of the Week this season to give her four weekly awards. She also is a four-time A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree.
Rising senior Rachel Hianik has been a key member of the Wildcats' defense the past three years, having started all of her 51 career games played. As a junior this past season the Raleigh, N.C., native registered career highs in games (18), starts (18), groundballs (28- second on the team), draw controls (10) and caused turnovers (12).
She recorded six multi-groundball games in 2017, with a career-high six coming against Campbell, while four times forcing a personal-best two caused turnovers in a game.
A native of Victor, N.Y., Kopp has been a steady contributor during her first two seasons, with a breakout sophomore campaign coming this past season. The rising junior started all 18 games, while recording career bests of 12 goals, four assists and 16 points. Kopp also added 22 groundballs to go with 34 draw controls and 13 caused turnovers, both of which ranked second on the team. Eleven times she had registered two or more draw controls in a game, including a career-best six at La Salle, April 23.
For the second year in a row Davidson made to the A-10 Championship, advancing to the semifinals for the first time in program history after a dramatic come-from-behind 14-13 win over George Mason in the quarterfinals. The Wildcats finished the year 8-10 overall and will return 16 letterwinners for the 2018 season.
