AMHERST, Mass. – Davidson sophomore Tori Long reset her own program record in the 400-meter run helping to highlight a great opening day of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship for women's track and field at the UMass Track & Field Complex Saturday.
Long slid into the final slot of tomorrow's 400m final with a new program record of 56.72 seconds. She last set the record in her last outing at the Duke Invitational on April 21 (57.52 seconds).
The 'Cats opened the meet with a pair of scoring finishes in the 10,000-meter run. Sophomore Caroline Yarbrough has had a lot of success in the A-10's over her first two seasons and came home in fourth overall with a time of 36:18.92. Junior Laurel Sheffield crossed the line in sixth, stopping the clock in 36:40.06.
Junior Stephanie Hautamaa stepped up and placed third overall in the pole vault. The Castle Rock, Colo., native cleared 3.55-meters (11'7.75) and holds four of the top-five best vault performances all-time. Freshman Carly Peters added to her teams opening day 20-point total, placing third overall in the javelin. Peters marked a throw of 42.58-meters (139'8).
The 'Cats sit tied for fifth overall with George Mason with 20 points apiece. Duquesne has the early and slim lead with 48 points, just ahead of Dayton in second with 47.
Davidson senior Hannah Rieden cruises into the 800-meter finals Sunday, winning her heat with a time of 2:10.45. Freshman Makayla Binter set a new personal best in the shot put and sits in ninth after day one of the heptathlon with 2,567 points – just 26 points behind a scoring place.
"What a great start for the Wildcats! We started the day with strong performances in the 10k … and it rolled on from there," said Director of Track & Field Jen Straub. "Two third place finishes in the pole vault and javelin continued the momentum! Tori Long broke the school record in the 400 to advance to finals for the first time in her career, Hannah Rieden ended the day by winning her heat in the 800m to advance to the championship heat and Makayla Binter in the hep. … we hope to continue to perform at a high level tomorrow."
