DAVIDSON, N.C. – Beginning the program's 29th season and their first under new head coach Adam Denton, the Davidson women's soccer team will host five non-conference opponents, including Atlantic Coast Conference foe Wake Forest, and have 10 home games in all as they enter their fourth year in the Atlantic 10 with the release of the 2017 schedule.
The Wildcats will play a 19-game slate, with nine of those contests outside of the conference. As part of the Atlantic 10 schedule, coming to face the 'Cats at Alumni Stadium will be VCU, Saint Louis, Duquesne, George Mason and George Washington. Over the last 13 years, Davidson has collected 64 wins at home.
"The fall season is going to be very exciting for this group of players," said Denton. "We have some very talented young players and the group is now more experienced in the A-10. We had a wonderful spring and put many things into place that we will continue to use when we compete this fall season."
Davidson, which went 5-13-1 a year ago, will play a preseason contest against Campbell on the road, Aug. 9, before starting up its 2017 schedule at home for the seventh straight year. It hosts Gardner-Webb and Wake Forest for the opening weekend, Aug. 18-20. Last year saw the Wildcats score a 2-1 win at GWU to remain perfect in the all-time series (6-0), while hanging tough against the Demon Deacons in a 1-0 setback on the road.
In addition, the Wildcats will also welcome East Carolina (Aug. 25), which will be the fifth time in the past seven years they have faced the Pirates.
"We have a very competitive non-conference schedule, playing teams from the ACC, CAA (Colonial Athletic Conference) and the Sun Belt," stated Denton. "These types of games will assist in our preparation for our A-10 competition. The entire group, players and coaches included, are very excited for the opportunities that this fall season can bring."
Following the three-game homestand, Davidson takes to the road for its next four to face East Tennessee State (Aug. 27, went 13-6-2 last year), Coastal Carolina (Sept. 3, went 12-6-3), Appalachian State (Sept. 7, 'Cats lead all-time series 19-5-3) and N.C. State (Sept. 10, went 11-9-2).
Home games against Winthrop and Elon, Sept. 14 & 17, finish out the non-conference slate of games.
Atlantic 10 play starts on the road for the second year in a row with a matchup at UMass, Sept. 21. Davidson netted its first win in the series last year vs. the Minutewomen, a 1-0 overtime victory at home. It will then return home for games against VCU and Saint Louis, Sept. 24 & 28.
Four of the final seven A-10 games will be on the road against Dayton, which won the A-10 Championship title, La Salle, Fordham and Richmond. The final two home games will see the 'Cats take on George Mason (Oct. 15), which will be Senior Day, and George Washington (Oct. 19).
This year the Atlantic 10 Championship will start out with the top-four seeds hosting the quarterfinals, Oct. 29, as the top-eight teams advance overall. The championship will continue November 3-5 on the campus of VCU with the semifinals and championship games being played. Davidson is seeking its first trip to the A-10 Championship.
