COLLEGE GROVE, Tenn. – Davidson's Jack Lang (82-75-75 = 232), the Atlantic 10 Individual Champion, concluded his memorable sophomore campaign with a final round three-over 75 Wednesday at the 2017 NCAA College Grove Regional.
The 54-hole event was played on The Grove's Par 72, 7,333-yard layout. Playing conditions were much harder on day three as winds gusted upwards of 20 mph.
Despite sitting at five-over after eight holes, due mainly in part to consecutive double-bogeys at the 11th and 12th holes, Lang got his round going with an eagle at the 580-yard, Par 5 18th. The sophomore made the turn in 39 for the second straight day and picked up another stroke with a birdie on the fourth after hitting his drive in the greenside bunker.
A native of Lexington, Mass., Lang dropped a shot at the Par 4 8th hole before closing out his first Regional appearance with a par at the last.
The 2016 Rookie of the Year played his final 10 holes in two-under par, while battling through the day's toughest elements.
In addition to becoming just the third player in school history to advance to the NCAA Tournament, Lang is the second Davidson golfer to play in an NCAA regional since the regional tournament format was adopted in 1989.
Lang, a recipient of three athletic scholarships: Dr. Tom Scott Golf Scholarship, Covington Golf Scholarship, and Southwood J. Morcott Golf Scholarship, has four-career Top-5 finishes in just 19 events.
No. 47 UCF (-1), which entered the day tied for second eight strokes off the pace, came from behind to claim the team title, while No. 2 Vanderbilt (+1), No. 39 Kennesaw State (+1) and No. 14 Clemson (+1) finished tied for second.
No. 35 Lipscomb (+5) finished in the coveted fifth spot to also advance to the NCAA Division I National Championship.
Lipscomb's Dawson Armstrong (-8) followed his course record 7-under 65 on Tuesday with a 2-over 74 this afternoon to capture the individual title.
Troy's Cam Norman (-3 | 213) was the top individual not on a team advancing, qualifying him for a spot in the NCAA Championship, which runs May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
The NCAA Division I Men's Golf Regional is a preliminary round of the NCAA Division I Men's Championship. Each Regional consisted of a 54-hole tournament with 13 or 14 teams and 10 individual players. The low five teams and low individual not included on those five teams advanced to the NCAA Championship.
