NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Davidson senior Will Robertson added to his trophy case this week, after claiming both national and league honors for a monster week at the plate. He was named a National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball, and tabbed Co-Player of the Week by the Atlantic 10 office, both on Monday morning.
Robertson put in an incredible week, where all of his hits were for extra bases, including four home runs. He went yard in back-to-back at bats at No. 3 North Carolina, where the 'Cats nearly pulled off the upset before falling 7-6 in 10 innings. The Greenville, S.C., senior followed that up by blasting a two-run shot in the first inning of his final 'home game', and then belted a solo monster in the seventh as the 'Cats defeated Big South leader Winthrop. Robertson's homers Wednesday were both no-doubters, sailing out of triple-A BB&T Ballpark, home of the Charlotte Knights, Chicago White Sox affiliate. He finished with five runs and six RBI, tallying three in back-to-back contests.
"What a fantastic honor for Will," head coach Dick Cooke said. "He had impressive back-to-back games against a couple of great clubs, and he's been a consistent presence for us in the lineup throughout the year. He's definitely embraced his role this year, and is definitely deserving of these honors."
Robertson delivered a dominant slash line, going .556 at the plate with a .600 on-base percentage and slugging at 2.000. Yes, 2.000. He has now reached base in 43 straight contests, just three shy of the program record set in 1996. Robertson has already recorded the longest hitting streak in school history, stringing together a 20-game streak that ended just last weekend.
Robertson tops the team with a .347 average, .653 slugging, 69 hits, 49 runs, 130 total bases, and a .407 OBP. He is tied for first on the squad with 15 doubles, and ranks second in homers with 14. He also tops the league in slugging, runs scored, and total bases.
He is the second Wildcat to earn National Player of the Week this season, joining classmate Brian Fortier, who garnered the honor in early February. This is the first time in school history that two separate Davidson players have earned the accolade in the same season. Robertson is the first Davidson player to earn a league award twice in the same season since Mac Chapman, a third baseman, did so in 1994.
The 2017 Davidson squad has now set a new record, with the most single-season weekly league plaudits in program history at five. Robertson was named Player of the Week twice, Fortier once, and their classmate Durin O'Linger took home Pitcher of the Week honors in mid-April. Freshman Brett Centracchio was tabbed Rookie of the Week in early April.
Robertson and crew will wrap up their regular season this week, traveling to Amherst, Mass., for a three-game stint with UMass.
