NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Davidson freshman Brett Centracchio has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week by the conference office after collecting four hits, including two homers, and tallying seven RBI in three games last week for the 'Cats.
Centracchio had a fantastic week at the plate, hitting his first collegiate homer and followed that up with his first grand slam. The first came in his third ever start, when Davidson was down 8-0 to host team Duke at the massive Durham Bulls Ball Park. The left-handed Centracchio pulled one deep to right field, just to the left of the foul pole and up in the middle section of the outfield grandstand; a three-run shot that gave Davidson its second hit of the game and cut the lead to five.
The freshman played the hero card Friday, belting a grand slam in the seventh inning vs. Saint Joseph's, helping the Wildcats regain the lead before going on to take the game 10-7.
He then turned in two hits Saturday before getting the day off Sunday.
He tallied seven RBI on the week and is carrying a four-game hitting streak. Centracchio posted a .429 clip in the two league games, and went .364 overall on the week.
Centracchio is the second ever Wildcat to earn A-10 Rookie of the Week honors, joining teammate Max Bazin, who earned the nod last April.
Centracchio and the 'Cats return to action Friday in their first road series of the year, facing La Salle in a three-game conference stint.
