Carlton Posts Career-Low on Opening Day of A-10 Championship

ORLANDO, Fla. – In addition to Hoke Carlton's career-low 68 (-4), Davidson fired a season-best 285 (-3) and sits tied for fifth following the opening day of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship at the Villas of Grand Cypress.
The three-day/54-hole event is being played on the Par 72, 6,794-yard Jack Nicklaus design.
Carlton (T-5th), a sophomore from Charlotte, made the turn at one-under 35, before playing his last five in four-under, highlighted by an eagle on the Par 4 14th hole.
Like Carlton, freshman Michael Freeman (T-14th) finished strong, recording three birdies down the stretch to match his personal-best with a two-under 70.
Jack Lang (T-14th), the 2016 Rookie of the Year, also carded a sub-par round for the Wildcats with a 70 (-2).
Davidson, which is competing in just its third A-10 Championship, finished the day with 18 birdies and an eagle. The Wildcats got off to a solid start and were six-under as a team after six holes.
Rounding out the Wildcats' scoring was senior Andy Simmons, who posted a five-over 77.
Both Richmond and George Washington recorded rounds of 15-under (273) to grab a share of the top spot on the team leaderboard.
In addition, the Spiders' Jack Justice and Vince Palazzolo of the Colonials are tied for the individual lead at six-under.
VCU is six strokes off the pace in third ahead of Dayton (-5), Davidson (-3) and George Mason (-3).
The winner of the event will receive the Atlantic 10's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
