NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — For the second time this year, Davidson won a pair of Atlantic 10 women's lacrosse weekly awards when junior goalie Rose Woolson and freshman midfielder Shayne Antolini were named Co-Defender and Co-Rookie of the Weeks, as announced by the league office Tuesday for games played from April 17-23.
Woolson, who shared the weekly award with Leslie Espenschield of Richmond, collected her second award this year and fourth overall. Antolini, who shared this week's award with Richmond's Sam Geiersbach, won her first career award and the first rookie of the week honor for Davidson. Senior Annie Brockett earned the other weekly honor this year with Woolson, Feb. 28, taking home A-10 Player of the Week.
The duo helped lead Davidson (7-8, 5-3 A-10) to a 2-0 week in road games at VCU and La Salle, pushing the team's win streak to three in a row.
Antolini had a stellar week, tallying six goals, and team highs of six assists, 12 points and six groundballs. She also added four draw controls. Antolini scored two goals and dished out two assists, while adding a season-best five groundballs in a 13-10 win at VCU last Friday.
The freshman from Babylon, N.Y., was even better at La Salle, recording season highs of four goals and four assists for eight points, which set a team season high this year. Her four assists tied a team season high.
Antonili helped Davidson put the game away during a 6-0 run early in the second half with a goal and three assists to turn a four-goal lead into a 13-4 advantage with 14:35 left on the clock.
Woolson handled the defensive end for the Wildcats, finishing the week with two wins, an 8.33 goals against average and 23 saves, while tying for the team lead with six groundballs. She played all 60 minutes, holding the Rams to just three goals in the second half, and stopping a career-high 15 shots.
A native of Baltimore, Md., the junior then came up with eight saves and allowed just six goals in over 55 minutes of action during a 17-6 road win at La Salle.
The A-10 All-Second Team pick in 2016 has career highs this year in saves (140), minutes (865:17), groundballs (team-best 57) and caused turnovers (10). Woolson ranks sixth in the nation in groundballs per game at 3.80.
Davidson will finish out the regular season with a Senior Day game next Saturday against George Mason, April 29, at 1 p.m.
