NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Davidson baseball claimed its third Atlantic 10 weekly honor Monday, as redshirt senior Durin O'Linger was announced as Pitcher of the Week by the league after an outstanding performance last Friday against in-state foe North Carolina A&T.
O'Linger shined on the road in Greensboro, picking up the Wildcats' first complete game and shutout of the season, leading Davidson to a 6-0 victory over the MEAC-leading Aggies.
He faced just two batters over the minimum, matching a career-high with nine punchouts (three looking). O'Linger did not allow a walk and limited A&T, who entered the weekend ranked 36th in the nation in batting average, to just three singles.
The Tampa, Fla., native and team co-captain used just 91 pitches in the win and was awarded with an honorable mention in d1baseball.com's Player of the Day segment. With the W, O'Linger and his nine classmates became the winningest class in program history, now at 106 wins. O'Linger himself became the winningest player in school history (126 as a player, not individual pitching wins).
This marks the second time O'Linger has been awarded A-10 Pitcher of the Week; he also got the plaudit last season after another complete game shutout, a 1-0 victory on the road at Saint Louis.
O'Linger joins his classmates Will Robertson and Brian Fortier, who each took home the title of A-10 Player of the Week earlier this season. Their accolades mark the most weekly awards in a season for the squad since joining the Atlantic 10 conference, and the most for the team in a single-season since 2005, when the crew claimed four weekly honors.
The trio and the rest of the 'Cats return to action Tuesday, traveling to Rock Hill to face border-rival Winthrop in the first of a two-game stint. Davidson and the Eagles will play again in early May at BB&T Ballpark in Uptown Charlotte.
