BOONE, N.C. — Davidson wrapped up one of its most successful seasons in recent history by scoring a 4-2 road win vs. former Southern Conference opponent Appalachian State Saturday afternoon in men's tennis.
The Wildcats concluded the regular season with a 16-7 overall record, the most wins in the regular season since 1994 when they had 16 as well. The 'Cats had 18 overall in 1998, earning three of those victories in the Southern Conference Tournament.
Singles were all that were played Saturday and Davidson won four of the six spots to earn the team win. Freshman Axel Fries capped off his outstanding first year during the regular season by picking up a three-set victory, winning the third set in a tie-breaker, 7-0. He had split the first two sets, 6-0, 4-6, at No. 3. The win was his team-leading 18th in 22 matches played.
Artem Khrapko also nailed down a win in three sets at No. 5, coming back from dropping a 7-3 first-set tie-breaker to score 6-2 and 6-4 wins in the next two sets. He finished the regular season with an 11-8 record.
The senior duo of J.B. Gough and Ricky Saad each tallied straight-set wins at No. 4 and 6 positions, respectively, in their final regular season matches. Gough tied his career high with his 13th win behind a 7-5, 6-2 triumph.
Saad won for the fifth time in six matches this year, bringing home a 6-3, 7-5 decision. It was also the seniors' 20th career win, while Gough won his 42nd overall.
Davidson next waits for its seed in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Championship, April 25-30, in Orlando, Fla.
