PITTSBURGH, Pa. – E.C. Matthews scored a game-high 19 points and Rhode Island drilled 12-of-20 3-pointers as the Rams ended Davidson's Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Championship run with an 84-60 victory in Saturday's semifinals at PPG Paints Arena.
The Wildcats, who knocked off La Salle in the second round and top-seeded Dayton in Friday's quarterfinals, fall to 17-15 overall.
Jack Gibbs, who led Davidson with 17 points, moved into third on the school's all-time scoring list with 2,036 career points. Peyton Aldridge also finished in double figures for the Wildcats with 13 to go along with 10 rebounds in 39 minutes.
After Davidson got to within 10, 53-43, with 15:41 to play, the Rams responded with a 25-6 run to take their largest lead of the contest, 78-49. During Rhode Island's game-changing spurt, the Wildcats were held without a field goal for almost nine minutes.
In addition to their performance from behind the arc, Rhode Island shot 49.2 percent overall, while holding the Wildcats to just 39.6 percent, including a 6-of-20 effort in the second half.
Rhode Island (23-9), which came in averaging just over six 3-pointers per game, drilled 9-of-12 from long range in the opening half before going to the break up, 46-34. The Rams shot 59 percent in the first 20 minutes and used a 20-8 run to lead by as many as 15 in the period.
Hassan Martin (16) and Kuran Iverson (12) also added double digits for the Rams, who held a 36-30 edge on the glass.
