DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Davidson baseball's Brian Fortier was named a National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball and Atlantic 10 Player of the Week Monday, after a monster weekend where he jacked four home runs and raked in nine RBI as the Wildcats went 3-1 on the week. He is the first Wildcat to receive the national honor since Drew Gadaire, also a first baseman, did so in 2009, and the first to get the league award since classmate Jake Sidwell did in March of last season.
The senior registered eight hits in 18 plate appearances, scoring six times. He leads both the Atlantic 10 and the country with five homers on the season, surpassing his overall total from his first three seasons combined.
"This is a great recognition and honor for Brian," associate head coach Rucker Taylor said. "He works hard day in and day out. His offensive numbers jump out, but he's played great defense as well. We know he's an outstanding player, and we look for him to continue to perform at a high level."
Tuesday, the Holly Springs, N.C., native registered two hits, including a two-run homer in the first inning of the Wildcats 12-11, extra-inning loss. Friday, Fortier cranked out two three-run bombs in the 'Cats come-from-behind victory Friday against visiting UMass Lowell, the first multi-homer game of his career and matching a personal best for RBI. Saturday, he was back at it, getting the Wildcats in the lead for what was ultimately the final time in their 7-4 win over Lehigh. This time, his solo-shot victim was 2016's NCAA sixth-best pitcher for opposing batting average.
While he didn't homer on Sunday, Fortier still reached based, placing a single perfectly into shallow right field to send his teammate to third and setup the eventual tying run to cross the plate. In fact, Fortier was responsible for, or played a key role in the setup, in giving the 'Cats the lead in each of their three games this weekend.
He recorded a monster 1.167 slugging percentage and went .500 in on-base percentage. He only struck out three times, and registered 29 putouts on a stellar week of fielding, making a few leaping catches in order to get the guaranteed out.
Fortier is currently second on the team with a .414 clip, but leads the team with 12 hits and 12 RBI, and is tied for first with nine runs. His season OBP is .469, while he's currently slugging at a fantastic 1.069.
He and the rest of the Wildcats return to action Tuesday, traveling to Winston-Salem for their first road game of the year, facing Wake Forest at 6 p.m.
