NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Davidson College placed 126 of an Atlantic 10 record 1,759 student-athletes on the 2016 Fall Commissioner's Honor Roll, announced by the conference Thursday.
For the third straight semester, the overall total, as well as the average per school, set a number of league records. Additionally, the league set a record of 125.6 honorees per institution, up from the 2016 spring semester's average of 121.3.
The 1,759 is the highest number of student-athletes that have qualified for the award since 2007 when the lists were regularly compiled. The total surpassed the 1,698 set during the 2016 spring semester, announced last June.
The 126 Wildcats honored were the most in their three years in the Atlantic 10. Women's indoor and outdoor track had 18 student-athletes to pace the 'Cats for the second consecutive semester. Next was women's cross country with 15, followed by women's soccer and men's indoor and outdoor track with 14 apiece.
To be listed on the bi-annual Commissioner's Honor Roll, a student-athlete in an Atlantic 10-sponsored sport must have a 3.5 GPA or better (on a 4.0 scale) during the specified semester. Unlike Academic All-Conference teams, freshmen are eligible to receive the award.
Fordham had the most fall semester honorees with 166, followed by Massachusetts with 165 and George Mason with 145. UMass edged Fordham in the 2015-16 academic year, 297 to 296 student-athletes.
