DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's lacrosse team will have the honor of hosting the England National Women's Lacrosse Team Tuesday evening inside Richardson Stadium in a friendly exhibition at 6 p.m.
This is the first time Davidson will host a national team, as the English team will also play North Carolina during their visiting. For head coach Kim Wayne and the Wildcats, it is a great honor and they are looking forward to it.
"Over the past eight years we have been lucky enough to travel overseas to play numerous National Teams, so having the opportunity to host the English Team on our home field was something we did not want to pass up." said Wayne, who is in her ninth season. "At the conclusion of the game we will be hosting the National team for dinner, so both teams can mingle and get to know one another. The National players range in ages and life experience which I know is intriguing – especially for the freshmen who are often a lot younger than the oldest National player. Tomorrow evening should be a very competitive game."
Davidson opened its 2017 season at Virginia Tech this past weekend and hung with the Hokies in a very competitive first half. Both teams were tied at 2-all through the first 10 minutes and the 'Cats were within 4-3 after freshman Genna Portner collected her first collegiate goal with 3:47 remaining.
Virginia Tech pulled away though with two late goals in the first half and then scored the first four goals of the second half to go up 10-3 and eventually had a 13-4 lead. Davidson finished the game strong, tallying three straight goals by the senior captains Annie Brockett and Nicole Pettiglio, and then Portner added one more score for the final of 13-7.
Following Davidson's exhibition Tuesday night, it will stay at home to host Siena next Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 6:30 p.m.
