Wrestling Opens the Season With Positive Results at the Hokie Open

BLACKSBURG, Va. – A new era of Davidson wrestling took to the mats Sunday in the 2017-18 season opener at the Hokie Open hosted by Virginia Tech.
In his first meet at the helm, head coach Andy Lausier saw four of his grapplers make the quarterfinals of the opening tourney.
Davidson senior Dustin Runzo moved up to 141-pounds in the off-season and earned a victory in his first match in the new classification, dispatching Southern Conference foe Landon LoAlbo in a thrilling sudden victory, 11-9. After falling in the quarters, Runzo went on to defeat Clayton Currier of Campbell in a 6-5 decision.
In the next class up, 149-pounds, junior Aidan Conroy needed a pair of close decisions to reach the quarterfinal of the bracket. Conroy opened the season with a 6-5 win over Nicholas Leitten of Limestone, and Tanner Stephens of Old Dominion, 4-3. After falling in the quarters to Gavin Londoof of Appalachian State, Conroy earned his first fall of the year, pinning Pat Mayolo of Army in 45 seconds.
Senior Konner Pritchard, also up a weight class from his junior campaign, won decisions over Trevor Parker of Army, 9-6, and Jordan Lacelle of Newberry, 4-2. Classmate Will Cooley was the final Wildcat to make the quarters, earning a hard-fought 3-1 sudden victory over Ohio University's Cale Bonner.
Other 'Cats seeing their hands raised were Joe Perino with a fall, Conor Fenn and Noah Satterfield in majors and Gony Palumbo and Will Baldwin by way of decision.
Davidson returns to the mat Saturday, Nov. 11 at the Mountaineer Duals, opening SoCon action against host App State and facing off against Bloomsburg.
