WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Despite falling 5-2 to No. 19 William & Mary (10-4) Sunday, Davidson field hockey (0-12) showed strong defense, as sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Zeszotarski collected a school-record 20 saves in just 45 minutes of action.
Junior Courtney Byler continued to impress, picking up her first goal of the season and adding a defensive save, her nation-leading fifth on the year. Sophomore Emily Roebuck also scored, while senior Lauren Gampper tallied an assist and a defensive save. Davidson ranks in the Top 10 nationally in defensive saves, with eight.
The 'Cats held the nationally-ranked Tribe to a stalemate until the final two minutes of the first period, when W&M got on the board with some crafty stick work on a shot to the back post. William & Mary then quickly added insurance as the second half began, scoring three times within ten minutes apart.
Roebuck chiseled her name on the stat sheet after getting the 'Cats on the board via a helper from freshman Sydney McKenna. The Tribe kept the lead at four after quickly following up with a goal, and Byler found the back of the cage off a ball from Gampper.
The 'Cats continue their Virginia road trip, traveling to Richmond to face league-foe VCU on Friday, Oct. 13.
