DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson field hockey dropped its 'Pink Game' Monday, falling 4-1 to Miami (Ohio) at Belk Turf Field. The 'Cats slip to 0-14 on the year, while Miami evens itself at 7-7.
Senior Hannah Fisher scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season, tying the game briefly after Davidson was awarded back-to-back penalty corners midway through the second period. Both classmate Anna Brewer and junior Courtney Byler were credited with assists on the goal.
Sophomore keeper Sarah Zeszotarski collected eight saves, bringing her season total to 96.
After a first period of back-and-forth possession, the Redhawks broke the blank with less than two minutes remaining, capitalizing on back-to-back penalty corners.
The Davidson defense delivered early excitement, with Zeszotarski pulling off the save in a dramatic penalty stroke midway through the first half.
Things looked promising when Fisher netted the equalizer, taking the dish from Byler after Brewer inserted.
The tie was short lived, as Miami took advantage of their own 'double corner', sending the ball to scoring-leader Paula Portugal who scored twice within five minutes of each other to take the lead and add insurance. The Red Hawks provided cushion with another goal converted from a corner with under two minutes left to take a 4-1 lead.
The Wildcats remain at home, hosting Atlantic 10 foe Saint Louis for Senior Day Saturday, before wrapping up their home schedule with No. 14 Wake Forest Sunday.
