DAVIDSON, N.C. — Head coach Kim Wayne and the Davidson women's lacrosse team recently picked their team captains for the 2017 season and the senior duo of Nicole Pettiglio and Annie Brockett were each tabbed captains.
Both players were key contributors during the 2016 campaign, playing in 17 and 14 games respectively, with Pettiglio starting all 17.
The senior pair were two of the Wildcats' main offensive threats last year. Brockett finished with career highs across the board, as she tallied 25 goals (2nd on team) and 31 points (4th on team), while adding six assists. All but three of her goals, two assists and five points came against A-10 opponents last year. The attacker started 13 of her 14 games played and picked up 12 groundballs to go with three draw controls and four caused turnovers.
The Shaker Heights, Ohio, native enters her final season in 2017 with career numbers of 52 goals, 12 assists and 64 points, while having started 30 of her 48 games played. Brockett owns 14 career multi-goal games, including a career-high eight this year.
Pettiglio finished her junior campaign with a nice all-around season. She recorded 17 goals and 17 points to go with 13 groundballs, 10 draw controls and nine caused turnovers. The Westford, Mass., native registered five multi-goal games to push career total to 11. Three different times Pettiglio tallied a hat trick in games against Kennsaw State, George Mason and St. Bonaventure. During a six-game stretch from April 8-24, she scored six goals, picked up seven groundballs, five draw controls and caused four turnovers ... had season-high three groundballs and two caused turnovers vs. Elon.
Entering her senior year, Pettiglio has registered 46 goals and six assists for 52 to go with 56 groundballs, 31 draw controls and 28 caused turnovers. She has started 38 of her 52 games played, including the last 33 straight.
Davidson, in its ninth year under the guidance of Wayne, is coming off a 8-9 season a year ago and went 5-4 in Atlantic 10 play to reach the league tournament in just its second year in the conference. The Wildcats return 14 letterwinners with the addition of eight freshmen.
