DAVIDSON, N.C. – A last second goal from senior captain Katherine English wasn't enough for the Wildcats (1-5, 0-1 A-10) Friday night, who dropped their Atlantic 10 opener 3-2 to VCU (2-3, 1-0 A-10) at Belk Turf Field.
English led the squad with three shots (two on-target), while classmate Becca Jones also tallied two shots, both on-goal. Junior Paige Albert scored the other 'Cats' point, taking the assist from Jones. Sophomore goalkeeper Bean Rodriguez notched seven saves, marking her third straight contest with at least seven saves.
Preseason All-Atlantic 10 selection Emily McNamara paced the Rams, scoring once and adding five shots (four on-goal).
The Rams attacked first, scoring off a high shot above Rodriguez's head in the right corner of the cage just five and a half minutes into the affair.
Davidson didn't delay in netting the equalizer, scoring just three minutes later courtesy of Albert and Jones. Jones stood inside the circle right at the baseline, sent it to Albert, who just pulled off a chip shot above the goalie and into the back of the cage.
VCU went back on top late in the first half, taking a rebounded shot that hit off the post and firing it across the cage to go up 2-1. The Rams added insurance to open up the second period, capitalizing on a penalty stroke at the 42nd minute mark.
With virtually no time remaining on the clock, Davidson was awarded a penalty corner, and English found the pass from sophomore Courtney Byler right at the top of the arc, and sent the ball to the lower left corner for a goal.
The 'Cats remain at home, facing another Virginia school, this time in William & Mary at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18.
