DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson field hockey (1-6) dropped a double-overtime shootout heartbreaker Sunday, falling 3-2 to William & Mary (3-4) Sunday at Belk Turf Field. Davidson ended double overtime still tied at 2-2, and lost the stroke-off 4-2.
"I'm really happy with the way we played as a team today," head coach Ginny Turner said. "It's miles better than we did on Friday, so I was happy to see us get back and play the way we are capable of. I think we started off great and had an awesome first half, but we just didn't play the second half with nearly the same intensity as the first and that's what got us. It was such a well fought game on both sides; everyone simply battled."
The Wildcats executed their first shootout of the season, after failing to score in both of the 15-minute overtime periods.
Junior Anna Brewer scored both of the 'Cats goals, with senior captain Anne Federico providing both helpers. Brewer led the squad with three shots on-goal, while seniors Katherine English and Becca Jones totaled a team-high four shots each.
Brewer, Federico, and Jones were three of the four shooters for Davidson in the stroke-off, the fourth being sophomore Courtney Byler. The Tribe made their first shot to take the early advantage after Jones took the ball down the right side of the circle but into the clutches of William & Mary's diving keeper. The team looked to get right back in after a Tribe missed attempt, but Brewer took was caught off guard by the keeper and missed. Federico and Byler each made their attempts, but after William & Mary's fifth shooter found the back of the cage, the shootout was awarded in their favor and the team took the hard-fought victory.
The 'Cats scored both of their first half goals in the same fashion. Brewer took the penalty corner, sending it to Federico who fired off a shot that was blocked. Brewer followed up, sending both to the back lower left of the cage.
The Tribe broke through in the second period, also using penalty corners as their way into the cage. Just a few minutes into the frame, William & Mary was awarded a corner, and freshman Cata Days pelted it to the center, where her teammate fired off a shot that was blocked, and she picked up the rebound, sending it to the lower right of the cage and cutting the lead to 2-1.
Days took the corner again late in the half, sending to her teammate who used a high lob shot over Rodriguez's head to net the equalizer.
The 'Cats threatened late in the first overtime period, being awarded three straight penalty corners with less than a minute to play. Brewer looked to repeat her magic, following up on a Becca Jones blocked shot but was unable to get it past the Tribe keeper, and the game remained knotted at two goals apiece heading into double overtime.
Davidson again carried the advantage late after a card was assessed to the Tribe, but once again were unable to capitalize on a couple late corners.
The Wildcats go back to Atlantic 10 play next, traveling to preseason favorite Richmond on Friday, Sept. 23.
