DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson field hockey (0-2) dropped its Sunday showdown with Ball State (2-0), falling 2-1 in heartbreaking fashion in a double-overtime contest at Belk Turf Field. With the win, Ball State has now matched its total victories from a year ago. It was the first overtime contest for DCFH since 2013, when they defeated Appalachian State 4-3.
The Wildcats lone goal came off senior captain Anne Federico, who delivered it in dramatic fashion with just 17 seconds left in the opening frame. The 'Cats tripled Ball State in shots on-goal, pulling off nine to BSU's three.
Federico fired three other shots on the day, all on goal, while classmates Becca Jones and Katherine English collected five and four, respectively.
"Just like with Friday, we're doing all the right things, we're just coming up short," head coach Ginny Turner said. "We continue to out-hustle and outplay our opponents, but we just need to find ways to close and finish the game."
The Cardinals got started early, finding the back of the cage just two minutes into the game on a cross to the middle.
Despite maintaining possession for most of the remaining half, Davidson was unable to secure the equalizer until Federico took the rebound off a shot from fellow captain English. For the second game in a row, English recorded what would have been the go-ahead goal, but it was called back by the officials.
The second half started in much the same manner, with Davidson staying on the offensive half of the field until about fifteen minutes remaining, when the Cardinals were awarded several corners to keep the 'Cats defense on edge, recording six shots to Davidson's three.
With the game knotted up at one goal apiece at the end of regulation, overtime rules were enforced. Each team sent six position players plus a keeper onto the field for a sudden-victory session. The contest remained at a stalemate at the end of the 15 minutes, bringing a second overtime period into action.
The Davidson offense was back to maintaining control, slapping four shots and two on-target. With just forty seconds remaining, a corner was awarded the Ball State, who sent the ball straight to dead center and an awaiting Cardinal, who guided it to the left back end of the cage.
