DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson field hockey offense exploded Saturday, picking up its first win of the season in an 8-1 victory over the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds at Belk Turf Field. The last time the 'Cats scored at least eight times at home was in 2011 when they beat Appalachian State 8-3.
Eight different Wildcats scored, including career-firsts from freshman Emily Roebuck and sophomores Kate Singletary and Courtney Byler. Sophomores Kristin Kisa and Leigha Nortier each turned in career-best performances, notching two shots on-target apiece, with Kisa adding a goal and two assists and Nortier turned in a team-high three helpers.
"It feels great to get the win," head coach Ginny Turner said of the victory. "I'm so proud to see so many different people contribute ot today's success. It was awesome to see so many girls find the back of the cage, and it was great to finally capitalize on all the shots we've been taking. This was a definite confidence booster as we head into a tougher part of our schedule."
Senior Lauren McFayden got the scoring started for the 'Cats, taking the rebound off a blocked shot from junior Paige Albert, who ended up with the assist.
Shortly after breaking the blank, the Wildcats added another goal, this time courtesy of senior captain Anne Federico, who stood at the left of the goal and sent the ball sailing to the right back of the cage.
Kisa was next to follow, receiving the ball from senior captain Katherine English off a pass flicked towards the middle of the arc and tapped it in for her second goal of the year.
With a 3-0 lead at halftime, the Wildcats explored different options, bringing in a completely different lineup for the second session, including freshman goalkeeper Sarah Zeszotarski, who recorded her first collegiate save.
Singletary was next to punch her ticket in the Goals column, finding the ball off a Nortier pass from a penalty corner. Byler, too, scored on the result of a corner, receiving the ball from Kisa and taking a straight wide open shot from the stick position.
Roebuck joined the club after staking out a position close to the penalty stroke spot, and tapped the Nortier-and-Kisa sent ball to the opposite side of the cage.
Senior Becca Jones accepted a pass from Nortier off a rebounded shot to score her first of the year, and sophomore Emily Morgan was the last 'Cat to collect a point. Morgan fired a shot that bounced off the keeper but found its way back to her as she flicked it high above and into the net.
LIU Brooklyn, in its first year as a program, recorded its first goal in school history after freshman Skai Sprenkle found a gap in the Wildcats defense about six yards out and sent the ball to the far post midway through the second half.
Davidson returns to action Sept. 13, traveling to Farmwood, Va., to face Longwood.
