DAVIDSON, N.C. – As July hits its midway mark, several Davidson College baseball players have also reached their midway points in their summer seasons. 11 Wildcats are involved in summer prospect leagues, stretching all the way across the country, with members playing in Alaska, California, and in northern states such as New York and New Jersey.
Additionally, right handed pitcher Clark Beeker- named to the ABCA/Rawlengs All-Region team this past year- is enjoying success in his first season in professional baseball after being selected in this past year's MLB Draft. Beeker graduated this past May after five seasons with the 'Cats, earning a redshirt due to an injury in the 2013 season.
Here's a look at how Davidson Baseball is faring this summer.
Clark Beeker, Pitcher | GCL Twins (Rookie League Affiliate of the Minnesota Twins)
Beeker has appeared in five games after signing his professional contract, boasting a 1-0 record with a save and 2.61 ERA.
The Lexington, N.C., native has recorded 13 Ks in 10.1 innings of work, including fanning seven in his longest outing, 3.2 innings, where he allowed just one hit and no runs in relief.
CURRENT DAVIDSON PLAYERS
Cameron Marshall, Outfield | Team Charlotte (Southern Collegiate Baseball League)
Marshall boasts a .322 average across 22 games, where he ranks third on the squad. He leads the team in both homeruns and RBI, with six and 11, respectively, and has scored 11 times. Marshall's six long balls also puts him atop the league in that statistic.
Marshall was recently named a SoBL All-Star, where he and fellow Wildcat Eric Jones played against All-Stars from the Sunbelt League (a Georgia based group) and the Florida Collegiate League All-Stars in Atlanta, Ga. In the first contest versus the Sunbelt League, Marshall entered the game and smashed a pinch-hit homer and remained in the game to play left field. He started the next game, also in left field.
Team Charlotte has five games remaining (as of 7/12), concluding its season on Friday, July 22 playing at East Mecklenburg High School.
Eric Jones, Catcher/Infield | SBA Bones (Southern Collegiate Baseball League)
Jones leads the team in multiple offensive categories, boasting a .373 average, five homers, and 26 RBI. He also has 16 runs, and his team sits just five games back from first place.
Jones is second in the SoBL in batting average, sitting just one point behind the league leader, and is also tied for second in HRs and RBI. Like his Davidson comrade Marshall, Jones was selected as an All-Star and joined him in Atlanta. Jones entered the first game of the weekend as a substitute, playing third base and collecting a hit and RBI in his only plate appearance. He started the next contest, also at third base.
The Bones sit tied for second in the standings, five games out of first with seven games remaining (as of 7/12). They conclude their slate on Friday, July 22, playing at Charlotte Christian.
Connor Gordon, Pitcher | Alexandria Aces (Cal Ripken League)
Gordon is averaging a strikeout per inning, with seven in seven so far this season.
The Aces are right in the hunt for the South Division, two and a half games back with eight contests remaining in their season.
Brian Fortier-Infield/Pitcher, Josh Smutzer-Pitcher (Closer), Josh Hudson-Pitcher | Charlottesville TomSox (Valley Baseball League)
Fortier has spent most of his summer stint in the infield, and tops the squad offensively in both doubles (7), and RBI (18). His two homers rank him second on the team with a .300 batting average.
Smutzer boasts a 3.09 ERA, collecting 14 Ks in 20.1 innings of work. His two saves are the only two for the team this season, and he's appeared in a staff-high 10 contests.

White is competing in the closest race for a league title amongst his teammates, with just three games separating the league's leader and the last place team.
Ward Coleman, Infield/Pitcher | Wilmington Sharks (Coastal Plains League)
Coleman has played in every game but one for the Sharks, starting all but three. Used primarily as an infielder, he's hitting at a .252 clip, carrying 15 RBI and nine runs. His .355 on-base percentage puts him second on the squad.
The Sharks finished the first half of the season as runner-up of the East Division, and currently sit in third with the season extending all the way up until mid-August.
Justin Lebek, Outfielder | Adirondack Trail Blazers (Perfect Game League)

Sutherland has started in four games for the Aviators this summer, supporting a 1-0 record with a 3.48 ERA (the best amongst starters) and 13 strikeouts in 20.2 innings pitched.
