DAVIDSON, N.C. — Beginning the program's 28th season, the Davidson women's soccer team will host five non-conference opponents as part of its schedule and have 10 home games in all as they enter their third year in the Atlantic 10 with the release of the 2016 schedule as announced by head coach Greg Ashton.
The Wildcats will play a 19-game slate, playing 10 of those contests outside of the conference. As part of the Atlantic 10 schedule, coming to face the 'Cats at Alumni Stadium will be La Salle, Dayton, UMass, Fordham and Rhode Island. Over the last 12 years, Davidson has collected 60 wins at home.
Davidson, which went 7-12 a year ago, will play a preseason match against Radford at home, August 13, before beginning its 2016 campaign at home for the sixth straight year. It hosts Campbell and former Southern Conference opponent Appalachian State over the weekend of Aug. 19-21. This will be the second year in a row matching up against the Fighting Camels. The all-time series, which dates back to 1992 and is just five games old, has the 'Cats leading 3-1-1 after taking a 2-1 decision on the road last season. Davidson has dominated the series vs. ASU, 19-4-3, but is looking to halt a two-game skid after falling in the last two meetings in overtime.
Overall, the Wildcats will be playing five of their first seven games at home. Their two road games during that stretch will be at Gardner-Webb, Aug. 26, and at Furman four days into the start of September. The Paladins were Southern Conference Tournament champions and advanced to the NCAA Tournament after going 17-5-1.
Davidson will host Wofford to end the month of August, then start the new month against East Tennessee State (7-1 all-time in the series) and finish up its five home games in a seven-game stretch against Marist, Sept. 9. The 'Cats are riding a 12-game unbeaten streak against Wofford after last year's last-second 2-1 double-overtime road win.
Starting a three-game road trip will be a visit to Atlantic Coast Conference-foe Wake Forest, which went just 5-12-2 a year ago. The two teams have not met since 2006 when the Demon Deacons were ranked 14th in the nation and took a 3-0 decision. Davidson will head to Elon, Sept. 15, for its final non-conference contest. It looks to avenge a 1-0 overtime defeat last year at home to the Phoenix, but still leads the all-time series, 12-9-1.
Atlantic 10 play starts on the road with a matchup against VCU, Sept. 29. The Wildcats, who went 3-7 in league play last year, fell at home to the Rams (8-9-3 last year) by the score of 4-2 last season and are searching for their first win in the series.
Three of the next four league games will be at home, starting with back-to-back tilts against La Salle and Dayton, Oct. 2 & 6. Last year was the first meeting against the Explorers, as the 'Cats dropped a 1-0 decision on the road. The Flyers went 10-9-1 a year ago and were the No. 2 seed in the A-10 Tournament, but fell to eventual A-10 Champion Duquesne in penalty kicks in the quarterfinals.
Davidson will face the reigning champion Dukes (12-10-2 a year ago) on the road, Oct. 9. The Wildcats netted a 1-0 shutout win last season at home vs. Duquesne, giving them their second victory in the series (2-1-1).
UMass will come visiting, Oct. 13, for the second time in the past three years. Following that game, Davidson hits the road for its second three-game road trip of the year with stops at George Mason (Oct. 16), St. Bonaventure (Oct. 20) and Saint Joseph's (Oct. 23). The 'Cats went 1-2 last year against all three teams at home. The Hawks are coming off a school-record 13 wins a year ago.
Wrapping up the regular season will be home games against Fordham and Rhode Island, Oct. 27 & 30. The Fordham Rams went 13-7-2 a year ago, reaching the A-10 Championship. Davidson has scored 2-1 and 1-0 wins the last two seasons against URI.
The Wildcats will be seeking their first trip to the A-10 Championship Tournament, an eight-team format which will be hosted by Rhode Island, Nov. 3-6.
