NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Atlantic 10 announced its major award winners as well as the all-conference, all-academic and all-rookie teams Wednesday, and the Davidson women's lacrosse team for the second year in a row saw at least three players earn honors.
Defender Holly Thomas and goalie Rose Woolson were each named to the second team, while freshman Sarah Kopp earned one of the 12-spots on the all-rookie team. It is Thomas' second year in a row being picked on the second team as one of five defenders.
Davidson, which had four players honored last year, enters its first A-10 Lacrosse Championship Thursday as the fifth seed after going 5-4 in league play and 8-8 overall. It faces fourth-seeded Saint Joseph's at 3:30 p.m.
Senior tri-captain Thomas led the way, again showcasing her outstanding play on the defensive end this year. The senior started all 16 games, finishing second on the team with 27 groundballs, 34 draw controls and 19 caused turnovers. She set or tied game personal bests in each category this season, including hauling in a team season-high eight draw controls during a win against Kennesaw State, Feb. 20. Five times she had multiple caused turnovers in a contest, while putting up seven multi-groundball games and eight draw control games.
The Houston, Texas, native moved into the Wildcats' top-10 all-time in career caused turnovers with 53 and is just outside the record in draw controls with 75. She has started 56 of her 63 games played, including her last 51.
After playing just one game in goal as a freshman in 2015, Woolson had a breakout second year between the pipes topped off by being named to the A-10 All-Second Team. The sophomore ranks in the league's top five in goals against average (8.31) and saves (108). Twice this year she was named the A-10 Defender of the Week, with her most recent coming March 14 when she guided the Wildcats to wins over VCU and Richmond.
Woolson, who won seven of the 'Cats' eight games, set personal bests in nearly every category this season, including groundballs with a team-high 36. Nine times she recorded two or more in a game, scooping up a career-high six in a win over Holy Cross, March 8. Four times she had double-digit saves in a game, stopping a career-best 14 twice against George Washington and Massachusetts.
After putting a pair of freshmen on the rookie team last year, Kopp gave Davidson another first-year player on this year's team. The Victor, N.Y., native was the lone freshman on the team to play in all 16 games, starting all of them as well.
She had a nice debut season, filling the stat sheet with eight goals and one assist for nine points on 16 shots. Kopp added 12 groundballs, 21 draw controls (third-most on team) and caused five turnovers. In her second collegiate game, the midfielder went off for season bests of three goals and six draw controls during a 19-6 win at Kennesaw State.
UMass took home four of the five top major awards, as Erika Eipp was the offensive player of the year, Kate Farnham the defensive player of the year, Hannah Murphy the midfielder of the year.
