BRONX, N.Y. – Junior Will Robertson's two-run homer in the eighth helped the Davidson baseball team to a 7-3 upset victory over No. 2 seed VCU in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship Thursday afternoon at Houlihan Park.

Heading into the bottom of the eighth up 4-3, Davidson (27-24) scored three insurance runs with the help of its second long ball of the day.

The Wildcats put in another impressive offensive performance, outhitting the Rams, 11-8, with the help of five extra-base hits, including two home runs. Bazin led the way with a 3-for-4 outing, while Robertson and Eric Jones each recorded a 2-for-4, two-RBI and two-run performance.

Davidson got out to a hot start, scoring multiple runs in first two innings off six hits, including a solo shot from Jones in the second. VCU slowly chipped away at the Wildcat lead throughout the fourth and fifth innings, but could not overcome the early deficit.

Evan Roberts (3-4) put in an impressive outing on the mound, allowing three runs off eight hits in 6.2 innings for the win, while Josh Smutzer silenced the Rams for the final 2.1 innings for his first save of the season.

Jonathan Ebersole (4-3) struggled early on the hill, allowing the first four runs off six hits in 1.1 innings, before Luke Crabb pitched five shutout innings and only allowed two hits. Two other Rams appeared in relief.

The Wildcats will return to Houlihan Park tomorrow, May 27 to face the winner of No. 1 seed Rhode Island at 12 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the American Sports Network.
