Runzo Places Fourth At SoCon Championships

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Sophomore Dustin Runzo won two matches Saturday, earning a trip to the consolation finals of the 2016 Arby's Southern Conference Championships.

After falling in the first round to second-seed Tyler Ziegler, Runzo started his run with a 6-3 decision in his match against Chattanooga's Cody Hill. Later in the day, Runzo carried his momentum into the consolation semifinals where the sophomore held on for a hard-fought, 6-5, decision over SIUE's Dakota Leach.

In the consolation finals, Runzo fell to Appalachian State's Irvin Enriquez, 8-2, to finish fourth.

In the first period, Enriquez struck first with a takedown, before Runzo responded with a reversal to even the score. Enriquez tallied an escape to take a one-point lead heading into the second. Enriquez padded his lead with a takedown and two back points to end the second period with an 8-2 advantage. Enriquez extended his lead in the third period to secure the win, 11-5.

Tony Palumbo and Konner Pritchard put up fights at 157 and 184 pounds, respectively. In the first round of consolations, Palumbo advanced by injury default over SIUE's Eric Travers. Palumbo kept things close with Gardner-Webb's Ryan Mosley, but ultimately dropped a 6-2 decision. In the first round, Pritchard fell to Chattanooga's John Lampe, 7-2, before narrowly falling to Appalachian State's Taylor Jackson, 2-0.

Wrestling in his final SoCon Championship, senior Nathaniel Powers fell to top-seed Nick Kee from Appalachian State and VMI's Mark Darr.
