DAVIDSON, N.C. — Entering its second year in the Atlantic 10, the Davidson women's lacrosse team was picked by the league's coaches to finish seventh in the preseason poll as announced recently by the league office.
The Wildcats received 38 points, getting picked behind George Washington (54 points) and ahead of Saint Joseph's (36).
Seven-time defending champion Massachusetts was picked to repeat as league champions for an eighth straight year with 100 points and all 10 first-place votes. Richmond was picked second with 88 total points. Both teams met in the A-10 Championship game for the second year in a row last season, with UMass scoring an 8-4 win. Duquesne was picked to finish third.
Davidson has faced eight of the other nine A-10 teams at least once during its program history. It will be playing VCU for the first time this year, April 15, at home.
Entering their eighth year under head coach Kim Wayne, the Wildcats are coming off a 6-10 campaign a year ago. They went 3-5 in league play, scoring wins against St. Bonaventure, Saint Joseph's and George Mason. Davidson returns 20 of its 26 letterwinners from last season, including nine starters.
The 2016 Atlantic 10 Women's Lacrosse Championship will be held May 5-8 at Duquesne's Rooney Field. The championship will feature an extended bracket of six teams.
The 'Cats open their 23rd year at home, Feb. 10, when it hosts Virginia Tech at 6:30 p.m.
