DAVIDSON, N.C. — Emma Sissman scored a game-high four goals and Christine Molinari dished out a career-high five assists, but Virginia Tech spoiled Davidson's season and home opener with a last-second goal to pull out a 9-8 decision Wednesday evening during women's lacrosse in Richardson Stadium.
Sissman had given the Wildcats, who had an early 5-0 lead in the first half, an 8-7 advantage on her fourth goal of the game off an assist from Molinari with 8:10 left. The lead would hold up until the 1:36 mark when the Hokies' Meghan Macera converted on a free-position goal to tie things up at 8-all.
Virginia Tech (2-1) would then get the draw control on the next possession and worked the ball down the field. Macera struck again, scoring the game-winning goal with 22 seconds left.
Davidson (0-1) earned the draw control with 13 ticks remaining, but a caused turnover by Macera, her third of the game, with one second left ended the 'Cats' bid to send the game into overtime.
Lucy Sexton had three points on two goals and an assist. Scoring their first collegiate goals for the Wildcats were Sarah Kopp and Charley Orner.
In addition to Macera scoring for the Hokies, Jessi Thon and Tristan McGinley also netted two goals each. Kristine Loscalzo scored a team-high three goals.
Behind Sissman's three goals in the first nine minutes of action, Davidson raced out a 5-0 lead in the first half. Sexton and Kopp added a goal and an assist during the opening run.
Tech would come back by finishing the half on a 5-1 run to cut the 'Cats lead to 6-5 going into halftime.
Davidson was very efficient with its 10 shots, scoring eight goals off them. Virginia Tech took 24 shots and doubled up the 'Cats on groundballs, 24-12.
In her first collegiate start, sophomore goalie Rose Woolson had a solid game in keeping Davidson close. She finished with a career-high 10 saves.
Holly Thomas earned a career-best four draw controls and picked up three groundballs. Veronica Fiorino picked up two groundballs and matched her personal-best with two caused turnovers.
Davidson takes a 10-day break before going on the road to face Kennesaw State, Feb. 20.
