DAVIDSON, N.C. – With the winter season rapidly approaching, Davidson baseball wrapped up its fall season with the conclusion of the Red and Black World Series. The team played a best-of-five series, dividing the squad into two teams, Red and Black.
All games were played at the newly renovated Wilson Field, spanning over the course of ten days, from Sunday, Oct. 23 to Tuesday, Nov. 2.
The Red team was victorious, winning all but one contest. The squad got the early advantage, winning the first game 11-7 and then followed that up with an 11-9 victory. Red took the series the following game, winning a close 3-2 battle, but couldn't pull off the clean sweep, dropping a 4-1 contest to Black before bouncing back to win 6-1 in the finale.
Junior Andrew Born led Red, going .500 during the series with five runs, pulling in two doubles and a triple. Senior Will Robertson added seven hits while scoring five times, including blasting a homer. Classmate Jake Sidwell plated a team-high six runs, while freshman Brent Centracchio topped the team with eight RBI.
The Red pitching staff was supported by six players with a sub-2.5 ERA, including three with 0.00. Sophomore Allen Barry tossed a team-high 8.1 innings, making one start and appearing in one other contest. Junior Josh Smutzer recorded a staff-best six Ks, starting in two games and finishing with a 2.35 ERA. Newcomer ZJ Zabinski had an impressive series, allowing just one hit and one walk, giving up no runs while fanning three in three innings of work.
Black's offense was boosted by a duo of sophomores in Justin Lebek and Cam Johnson, and freshman Zach Nussbaum. Johnson and Nussbaum each tallied seven hits, while Lebek added six and all three scored four times.
Black got a solid performance from junior Connor Gordon, who struck out seven in just four innings of work, giving up just one hit with no runs or walks.
The Davidson baseball roster features 10 seniors and an overall 30 returning lettermen from last season. The club welcomes 10 newcomers, nine freshmen and a transfer, to their 2017 squad. The Wildcats begin their spring campaign in mid-February, hosting Georgetown for a three-game series.
