SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – Seven Davidson football players earned Pioneer Football League All-Conference honorable mention recognition, announced by the league Tuesday.
Four seniors led the charge with linebacker Nate Casey, punter John Cook, offensive lineman Chase Davis and defensive back Jaylen Mize making the cut. Three juniors - long snapper Conrad Mueller, wide receiver Jaris Scott and defensive lineman Thomas Sykes rounded out the 2016 honors.
Casey had a great final season for the 'Cats including being named to the Allstate Good Works Team. The Tega Cay, S.C., native recorded 37 total tackles, 18 solo stops and 7.5 tackles for loss. Casey forced a fumble and broke up a pass, starting and appearing in nine games.
Cook, a regular utility man for Davidson, made his mark as a punter in his final season. The Raleigh, N.C., native averaged 37.1 yards-per-punt and pinned the opponents inside of 20 yards 23 times. He registered three 50-plus punts including a season-long kick off 66 yards against Jacksonville. On offense, Cook caught four passes for 36 yards.
Davis started in all 11 games, helping anchor a Davidson offensive line that allowed just 14 sacks, tied for fourth lowest in the PFL. The Mount Pleasant, S.C., native also earned the Bill Gammon '70 Wildcat Award for his efforts over four years.
Mize led the team in tackles with 54, making 20 solo stops. He intercepted three passes while starting all 11 games in the secondary. Mize forced and recovered a fumble and recorded 2.0 tackles for loss. For his efforts he was named the team's Paul Biggers '59 Co-Defensive Player of the Year, along with sophomore Boo Jordan.
Mueller made it easy on Cook, completing all of his snaps while allowing zero blocks in 11 games of action. The Waxhaw, N.C., native made three solo tackles and forced a fumble on special teams.
Scott led the receiving core with 638 yards on 36 receptions and a pair of touchdowns. Scott posted two 100-yard games, including a monster 190-yard day against Jacksonville where he hauled in a 73-yard touchdown grab. Each of his two scores came with 100-yard performances.
Sykes led the squad with 8.5 tackles for loss for 32 yards. The Mebane, N.C., product made 37 total tackles, registered 2.5 sacks and recovered a fumble, returning it 20 yards for his first career touchdown in a win over Livingstone.
Davidson freshman quarterback Stockton McGuire was named the PFL Freshman Offensive Player of the Year on Monday, the third Wildcat to earn this distinction since it was first awarded in 2008.
