DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson freshman quarterback Stockton McGuire was named STATS FCS National Freshman Player of the Week honorable mention, announced by the organization Monday afternoon.
McGuire busted out for 102 yards rushing off 11 carries and a touchdown on Saturday against Stetson. The Douglasville, Ga., native broke away on the second play of the third quarter for a 72-yard scoring scamper, the longest rush of his career. McGuire also set up a 16-yard touchdown pass to freshman running back Keylan Brown off a quarterback keeper that churned up 35 yards in the second stanza. He completed 12-of-31 passes for 130 yards and threw for two scores, combining for three on the day.
"Stockton has done a tremendous job of picking up our system," said head coach Paul Nichols. "Credit our offensive coordinator Vinny Marino for an outstanding job of helping Stockton progress. We are excited about his future."
McGuire is the second Wildcat to earn the distinction this season. Brown was recognized back on Sept.12 for his 95-yard, one touchdown performance at Kentucky Wesleyan.
Davidson returns to action Saturday, Oct. 8 when they travel west to visit San Diego for a Pioneer Football League clash. Kickoff from Torero Stadium is slated for 4 p.m. eastern.
