DAVIDSON, N.C. – As part of Davidson's season opener at the Citadel Saturday, members from the 1965 Davidson football team will gather to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Wildcats' 14-0 win at The Citadel on Oct. 2, 1965.
Approximately 35 players from the squad along with coaches Dave Fagg and Dick Tomey will be in attendance on Saturday.
With a new coaching staff and a spruced up stadium, the Wildcats kicked off the 1965 season flawless as the team recorded three-straight victories without yielding a point. Davidson downed Presbyterian (35-0) and Furman (24-0), before recording the 14-0 upset at The Citadel.
Davidson scored twice on the nationally ranked pass defense with its first points following a fumbled Bulldog punt late in the first quarter. The game then came to a halt until the final minute where Wildcats secured the victory, scoring with 43 seconds remaining in front of a crowd of 8,500.
First-year head coach Homer Smith then led the Wildcats to a 6-4 record with wins over Lehigh (37-23), Lafayette (14-10) and Wofford (13-6). Smith went on to coach four more years, finishing with an overall record of 24-24 and leading Davidson to the 1969 Southern Conference Championship.
