Box Score
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senior Melissa Funsten scored Davidson field hockey's first goal of the season, leading the Wildcats to a 1-0 victory in its season-opener over Georgetown Friday evening at Multi-Sport Field. Davidson has now won two of its last three season debuts against the Hoyas.
Georgetown exerted a strong offensive effort, registering 12 penalty corners to the Wildcat's seven, but the Davidson defense stood tall, while the offense took advantage of its opportunities.
The first half progressed slowly, with neither side fully taking advantage of opportunities. Georgetown earned its fair share of penalty corners, but the Wildcat defense and senior backstop Emily Leytham, kept things quiet.
The Wildcats took the lead with 9:09 remaining in the first half. Junior Katherine English put Davidson in prime scoring position, carrying the ball up the field and dishing it to Lucy Pidock in the center. Pidcock slid the ball past Georgetown's keeper Rachel Skonecki to Funsten, who found the back of the net.
The second half was a back and fourth battle. Davidson ripped five shots in the second frame, while limiting the Hoyas to just one. Leytham finished the night with four saves.
Davidson returns to action Sunday at Lehigh. The game is set for noon.
