FAIRFAX, Va. – Walker Mogen raced to the top of the podium in the 5,000-meter event to win an Atlantic 10 individual title as the Davidson men's track and field team concluded the 2015 A-10 Outdoor Track and Field Championship Sunday at George Mason.
Mogen posted a time of 14:45.15 in the 5,000 to earn his first-ever title. The sophomore finished 4.12 seconds ahead of Saint Louis's Neal Fitzpatrick (14:49.27). Whitner Chase wasn't too far behind as the senior clocked a 14:50.39 to rank fourth. A day earlier, Chase earned a title of his own with a first-place finish in the 10,000-meter event with a time of 30:45.30.
Daniel Samet posted a time of 15:16.56 to finish 12th overall in the 5,000.
Davidson continued to showcase its depth in the middle distance and distance events. In the 1,500-meter, the Wildcats had three top-15 finishes. Ian Robertson led the way with an eighth-place finish, crossing in 3:52.74. Teammates Ryan Phillips (3:55.54) and Ramsay Ritchie (3:56.80) finished 12th and 15th, respectively.
Charles Rappe posted a top-five finish in the 400-meters hurdles. Rappe turned in a 54.29 performance to finish fifth.
"This weekend's meet showed that we can really compete in the A-10; it was a complete team effort, as we scored points in the hurdles, sprints, field events and distance races. We couldn't be more proud of how the guys competed this weekend," said Associate Head Coach Renny Waldron.
"Walker ran a great race; it's rare to see a sophomore run with such patience. He has come a long way this year and is running a very high level now," said Waldron.
"Whitner was our MVP of the meet. Today's race was incredibly gutsy, coming back from winning the 10k last night."
For the team's three seniors – Sal del Giudice, Whitner Chase and Greg Sargent – today marked the end of their Davidson outdoor track career.
"We had a great year from our seniors, who did a remarkable job embracing some new changes and helping bring everyone on board with what we are trying to do, said Waldron. "We will be very sad to see them go, but also very proud of what they have done and where they are going. They will always be a valuable part of our Davidson College Track and Field family."
Davidson finished eighth out of the conference's 13 teams with 31 total team points.
Davidson will head to the Aggie Last Chance Meet hosted by North Carolina A&T May 17.
