ARLINGTON, Va. – The Davidson baseball team's first ever A-10 Tournament rally fell short to the No. 2-seeded Rhode Island Rams, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at Barcroft Park.

The Wildcats, who eliminated top-seeded Saint Louis and No. 6-seed George Washington Friday, finished their impressive 2015 season with a 28-22 overall record – their second-straight season with at least 28 victories.

Davidson edged the Rams, 8-7, in hits, while both team made an error. Center fielder Cam Johnson led both teams with three hits and one RBI in four at bats, while third baseman Ben Arkin followed with a 2-for-3 performance and two RBI.

The Rams got on the board first in the third off a Derek Gardella single to right field that scored Tim Caputo who drew an early walk.

Davidson responded with two runs in its next at bat to take a 2-1 lead. The 'Cats started the fourth inning drawing two-straight walks from designated hitter Ryan Lowe and right fielder Lee Miller and were later brought in off an Arkin sac fly and a base hit from Johnson, respectively.

Rhode Island matched Davidson's two runs by scoring two-straight walks off a single to right field that made it a one-run ball game at the start of the fifth. But the Rams later got a run across in the sixth off three hits to take a 4-2 lead.

The Wildcats' rally fell short as they got just one run in the final two innings as the Rams advanced to the A-10 Championship to face No. 5 VCU.

RHP Josh Smutzer made his first career start for the 'Cats, pitching the first four innings and allowing three runs off three hit for the loss. RHP Evan Roberts then made his second appearance of the Tournament, before RHP Matt Saeta finished off a stellar Wildcat career striking out the final URI batter.

RHP Derek Kawlewski started the first six innings for the Rams, allowing two runs off seven hits with four strikeouts for the win. RHP Brad Applin pitched the final inning, getting one strikeout for the save.

Following the A-10 Championship, the conference announced the 2015 A-10 All-Championship Team and Miller and Lowe were selected. Miller's game-winning two-RBI homerun against George Washington placed the junior on the team, while Lowe finished the tournament with a .467 batting average and led the Wildcats with three hits and two runs in the win against the top-seed Saint Louis.
