Wildcats Fall To No. 5 VCU On First Day Of A-10’s

ARLINGTON, Va. – The No. 4-seeded Davidson baseball team fell to No. 5-seed VCU, 11-0, on the first day of the 2015 Atlantic 10 Tournament Wednesday evening at Barcroft Park.
Davidson (26-11, 14-10 A-10) will return to the field tomorrow, May 21 to take on the loser of game six between top-seed Saint Louis and the Rams, as the tournament is double elimination.
VCU (34-22, 14-10 A-10) out hit the Wildcats, 12-5, while Davidson committed three errors compared to VCU's two. Third baseman Matt Davis led both teams with a 5-for-5 performance with two runs scored and three RBI. Davis' five hits tied the tournament record.
Designated hitter Ryan Lowe, shortstop Alec Acosta, catcher Tyler Agard, second baseman Sam Foy and left fielder Will Robertson each picked up a hit for the Wildcats.
The Rams started the day off hot, taking an early 5-0 lead in the first three innings. After getting a run across in the first and second, VCU picked up a three-run homer in the third to grab the momentum.
Scoring runs in the next three innings, while holding Davidson to five hits secured the game for the Rams.
LHP JoJo Howie recorded the win for VCU, pitching all nine innings with nine strikeouts and two walks.
RHP Clark Beeker started the first five innings for the 'Cats and allowed 10 runs off eight hits with three strikeouts for the loss. LHP Evan Roberts, RHP Connor Gordon and RHP Josh Smutzer also appeared on the mound.
The Wildcats will return to the field tomorrow, May 21 to face the loser of game six at 8:30 p.m.
