NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The freshmen pair of David Hager and Ava Todd for the Davidson men's and women's tennis teams were honored by the Atlantic 10, as they were named the league's rookies of the week for matches played from March 24-30. Todd was named co-rookie of the week with Kyle Isaacs of Duquense.
It was Todd's fourth weekly honor this year, including her third rookie of the week award. For Hager, it was the first-year's second award this season.
The duo had an outstanding week in leading their teams. Hager went a combined 5-1 in singles and doubles last week for the Wildcats in matches against UNCG, Richmond and N.C. Central. He pushed his win streak to three in a row with all three singles wins, earning straight-set victories in all three by scores of 6-2, 6-4 vs. UNCG, 7-6, 6-2 at Richmond and 6-1, 6-4 at N.C. Central. Hager moved his record to 9-4 on the season with all three wins, including 7-1 at the No. 5 singles spot.
The Edmond, Okla., native also teamed with Artem Khrapko at No. 3 doubles for a pair of wins against UNCG and Richmond to run their doubles record to a team-best 9-5 on the season.
Todd continued her impressive freshman campaign, recording three more wins, two of them in singles against Western Carolina and Brevard College at No. 3 to move her win streak 15 straight. Her overall record moved to 15-1, including 4-0 at the No. 3 position. The Baltimore, Md., native picked up straight-set wins of 7-6, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-2.
On Sunday vs. Brevard, Todd also paired with Blake Nickles for the first time, shutting out the Tornados' No. 3 doubles team for their first win. She has recorded eight doubles wins overall.
