DAVIDSON, N.C. – Senior Todd Eckstein opened with a one-over 73 to pace the Wildcats on day one of the 2015 Davidson College Invitational Monday afternoon at River Run Country Club.
Eckstein (T-13th), who birdied three of his first six holes, will begin tomorrow's final round just three strokes off the lead.
Despite shooting a team score of 310, Davidson is only 12 shots behind Marshall and Radford, which are tied for fifth.
Coming off a solid performance in the Wildcats' spring opener, David Sargent posted a 75 and is currently tied for 32nd. Ralph Blasey (80/T-60th), Andy Simmons (82/T-62nd) and Alex Nianouris (83/T-64th) rounded out Davidson's starting five, while Spencer Papciak shot 75 as an individual competitor.
Ranked 49th in the most recent poll, Chattanooga holds the top spot on the team leaderboard by one stroke over Charlotte. Wofford, which will play in the final group with the Mocs and 49ers, is six off the pace following a 294.
Charlotte's Victor Wiggins carded one of five sub-par rounds and leads the 73-player field at two-under par. Four golfers are tied for second one back, while seven others fired even-par 72.
In addition to the host Wildcats, the 12-team field features Chattanooga, George Washington, Marshall, Holy Cross, Stetson, Wofford, Radford, Presbyterian, Longwood, Gardner-Webb and Charlotte. Members from the Wake Forest golf team are also competing as individuals.
The 36-hole event is being played on the Par 72, 7,208-yard River Run Country Club layout.
Tomorrow's final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. off holes 1 & 10.
