NEWPORT NEWS, Va.  — Playing in its first year in the Atlantic 10, the Davidson women's lacrosse program was picked by the league's coaches to finish sixth in the preseason poll as announced recently by the league office.

The Wildcats received 35 points, getting picked just behind George Washington (42 points) and ahead of Saint Joseph's (29).

Six-time defending champion Massachusetts was picked to repeat as league champions for a seventh straight year with 80 points and eight first-place votes, while Richmond earned the other first-place vote and 70 total points. Both teams met in the A-10 Championship game a year ago. Duquesne was picked to finish third.

Davidson, which has faced seven of the eight other A-10 teams at least once during its program history, is making the move from the Big South, where it played the past two years.

It was a very successful season for the 'Cats in 2014. After matching the school-record for wins in 2013, the Wildcats set a new mark this past year by going 12-7 overall behind the strength of a school-best nine-game win streak. They also finished second in their final season in the Big South with a 6-1 mark and made an appearance in the Big South Championship game for the second year in a row. Last year's successful campaign also saw head coach Kim Wayne become the program's all-time winningest coach with 52 career victories.

In all, the 'Cats return 20 letterwinners from a year ago, including seven starters led by Emily Rademacher (32 goals, 41 points), Emily Cooke (42 assists, program-record 105) and Emma Sissman (career-best 50 goals last year). They also return their top goalie Katy Boyle, who had 126 saves and a 9.24 goals against average last year.

Davidson opens its 22nd year at home, Feb. 15, when it hosts Kennesaw State in its season opener at 1 p.m.
