DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Wildcats saw their season-high five-match win streak come to an end Thursday afternoon when James Madison took a 4-3 decision in nonconference women's tennis action in the Knobloch Tennis Center.
The five-match winning streak was Davidson's (5-2) longest since it run off a five-match streak to open the 2010 season. The 'Cats and Dukes were meeting for the first time since 2000 with JMU (5-2) now holding a 5-1 lead in the all-time series.
Davidson opened the match by winning the doubles point after 6-0 and 6-2 victories at No. 2 and 3, respectively. The pair Ally Sexton and Anna Catharine Feaster remained unbeaten on the season at 7-0 with their win at No. 2. Ava Todd and Sarah Stein won their fourth overall together with their victory at No. 3.
Todd and Cassidy Shell though were the lone Wildcats to score a win in singles action, as the Dukes took the top four positions to come back from the 1-0 deficit. Todd kept her personal winning streak alive, pushing it to a team-best six straight with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at No. 5.
Shell moved to 5-2 on the year by winning a third-set super tie-breaker, 10-6. She split her first two sets, 3-6 and 6-2.
Seeing their own win streaks come to a halt were Elaina Cummer, Feaster, and Jenna Brunner.
Cummer's four-match win streak, which tied a personal-best, came to an end with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat at No. 1. Three-time Atlantic 10 Rookie Performer of the Week Feaster had her five-match winning streak halted after a 6-2, 6-3 setback at No. 2.
Having her three-match win streak end was Brunner, who forced a third set and an extra game in the final set, but dropped a 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 match at No. 4.
Davidson stays at home for a weekend matching up against East Carolina starting at 10 a.m.
