DAVIDSON, N.C. – For the second consecutive semester, the Davidson football team posted an impressive academic performance as the Wildcats finished with a 3.04 grade-point-average.
In all, Davidson had 54 student-athletes record a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the fall, while 12 had at least a 3.5 and one a perfect 4.0. On New Year's Day, senior linebacker Dan Casey was recognized at the Sugar Bowl for being named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®. "We are committed to academic and athletic excellence in our football program," said head coach Paul Nichols, who just completed his second season at the helm of his alma mater. "Academic achievement is a major component of a successful football program. Our student-athletes have worked hard to achieve at such a high level. We look forward to continuing to grow our academic success."
Bryant Bednarek, Colin Merrill and Josh Daryoush were named to the Capital One Academic All-District III Division I Football Team in November, while William Morris joined the trio on the Pioneer Football League All-Academic squad.
In addition to holding a 3.254 cumulative GPA as a religion major, senior linebacker Dan Casey was named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, which is one of the most prestigious off-the-field-honors in college football. The award pays tribute to a select group of student-athletes who have worked to positively impact the lives of others.
Casey, who was honored at the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day, was one of four NCAA Division I FCS players on this year's 11-man team comprised of student-athletes from across FCS, NCAA Divisions II and III, and the NAIA. The other 11 members were selected from NCAA FBS schools.
Davidson, which is expected to be well represented on the PFL Honor Roll, will hold its annual spring game on March 28 at 3 p.m.
