NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Senior Emily Cooke and freshman Christine Molinari became the first Davidson women's lacrosse players to earn Atlantic 10 weekly awards as the duo were named the player and rookie of the week for games played from Feb. 9-16.
Davidson, playing in its first year in the A-10, scored a season-opening 21-4 victory on Sunday against Kennesaw State, and leading the way was Cooke and Molinari.
The former 2013 Big South Offensive Player of the Year Cooke registered a team-high eight points on two goals and six assists. The senior attacker helped the Wildcats open up an 8-0 lead in the first half by picking up three assists and a goal. Then in the closing seconds of the half, Cooke tallied her fourth assist on Lucy Sexton's fifth goal to make it 13-3 at halftime. The duo had hooked up twice earlier in the first 14 minutes of the game.
Cooke, who is four away from moving into second place all-time in the Wildcat record books in points, also added a pair of groundballs and forced one of Davidson's six caused turnovers. She already holds the career assist record, pushing her total to 111 after dishing out six on Sunday.
The honor was Cooke's third career weekly award after picking up National Lacrosse Newcomer of the Week in 2012 and Big South Offensive Player of the Week as a sophomore in 2013.
Making her collegiate debut was Molinari, who earned a start in her first career game. The freshman scored one of the Wildcats' 13 goals in the first half on her first-ever shot, while adding two groundballs in the victory.
The Wildcats' snapped a five-game skid in season openers with the win Sunday against the Owls.
Davidson remains at home, next facing Navy on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 1 p.m.
