RALEIGH, N.C. – The Davidson baseball team fell to N.C. State, 8-3, at Doak Field Saturday. The Wolfpack belted 16 hits on the afternoon to take and keep the early advantage.
Brian Fortier paced the Wildcats going 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit two-run homer in the ninth inning, while Ryan Lowe (1-for-5) and Alex Acosta (1-for-3) also scored. On the mound, Rob Bain went five innings, allowing three earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and a walk for the Wildcats.
N.C. State's Preston Palmeiro went 5-for-5 with a run and RBI, while freshman righthander Evan Mendoza threw five innings, allowing one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts.
The Wolfpack jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning behind a Jake Amstrong sacrifice fly to bring Logan Ratledge home from third base. N.C. State padded its lead in the second half of the third when Joe Dunand doubled to center field and was eventually batted in by Jake Fincher. Thanks to three hits in the fourth inning, the Wolfpack extended its lead, 4-0.
The Wildcats got on the board in the top of the sixth after Lowe hit a home run to left field.
In the bottom of the sixth, N.C. State registered four hits and scored three runs to put the game out of reach.
The 'Cats looked to rally in the top of the ninth, with Acosta at second base, Fortier homered to left field, to make it 8-3, but Andrew Born stuck out and Lowe grounded out to second base to end the frame.
The Wildcats return to Davidson for the home opener against ACC rival Wake Forest, Tuesday.
