RALEIGH, N.C. — The Davidson baseball team erased a 3-0 deficit with a five-run eighth inning and the Wildcats pulled out a 5-3 season-opening win against Appalachian State Friday night on the campus of North Carolina State.
For the second time in the past three years the Wildcats won their season opener as they were playing a familiar foe in former Southern Conference opponent Appalachian State (0-1).
Davidson's big eighth inning came by way of just two hits as they drew five walks to help plate the winning and insurance runs. Ben Arkin had one of the two hits, a two-run single that scored David Daniels and Andrew Pope to tie things up at 3-all. He then came home to score the game-winner on a base-loaded walk by freshman Alec Acosta and Sam Foy, who had singled in the inning, scored the final run when catcher Jake Sidwell's walk forced in another run.
Foy finished 2-for-4 with a run, while Arkin, Lee Miller and Will Robertson had a base knock each. Daniels drew three of Davidson's eight walks on the night.
The Mountaineers finished with eight hits, led by Bradley Morton's two. Three of the hits went for doubles.
Pitcher Matt Saeta pitched outstanding in relief of starter Clark Beeker, going four shutout innings and allowing just one hit, while striking out five to earn the win. Beeker went four innings, giving up all three of ASU's runs, but walked just one batter and struck out seven.
Cody White closed out the win for Davidson with his first career save.
Appalachian State got a run in the second inning and picked up a pair in the fourth to grab the early 3-0 lead. Michael Pierson drove in two of the three runs.
Jeffrey Springs shut the 'Cats down for five innings, finishing with three hits, a walk and three strikeouts.
Davidson will play host N.C. State tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. to finish out its opening weekend. Sunday's neutral site contest against Villanova has been cancelled due to expected cold weather.
