AWP Pre-Season Individual Rankings
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Scott Patrick and Kevin Birmingham were named to the Associated Wrestling Press (AWP) preseason NCAA individual rankings, announced Wednesday. Patrick sits at 30th in the 184 weight class, while Birmingham is ranked 20th at 149 lbs., marking the first time in program history two Davidson wrestlers have been nationally ranked at the same time.
"It is exciting to have two guys ranked in the country for the first time in program history," said head coach Bobby Patnesky. "The big thing is they need to have fun and enjoy the process without getting caught up in rankings and expectations. They had a great summer of training here at Davidson, and they are ready to build off of the successes of last season."
A season ago, Patrick and Birmingham became the first Davidson duo to qualify for the NCAA tournament in the same season in nearly 50 years.
Patrick won nine of his last 12 matches to post a team-best 21-5 overall record with a 15-5 conference mark. The senior won the 2014 Southern Conference Wrestling title at 184 lbs. with an 8-3 win over Campbell's Ville Heino to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. At nationals, the Ellicott City, Md., native went 0-2 as he fell to No. 8 TJ Dudley of Nebraska and Dominic Abounader of Michigan.
Birmingham, a 2014 NCAA national qualifier, posted a 20-10 overall record with a 17-9 mark in the Southern Conference while tying the program record with 14 pins on the season, a record set in 2004-05 by Matt Pendle. Hailing from Sicklerville, N.J., Birmingham was narrowly edged at the 2013 SoCon Tournament at 149 lbs. by Dylan Cottrell of Appalachian State, dropping an 11-5 decision in the finals. At nationals, the senior posted a 0-2 record.
